Corner Villa

Many private villas in Jeddah could be called mansions.  All villas are surrounded by high walls for privacy.  Many Saudi families have lots of kids and they often live together with extended family members like grandparents.

Our World: Saudi Style Phone Covers

I dig the variety of phone covers designs that are available in Saudi Arabia, especially the ones that depict aspects of life here.  The hennaed hand is a very common sight at Saudi weddings, for the brides and attendees.

I got one of these veiled women covers for my phone - and it cost less than $10 US.

There are also variations on the black veiled woman phone covers, like this one in stripes or florals, or in other colors like the pink one in the top photo.

Our World: Edible Accessories

Saudis like their sweets and I am constantly amazed by the sheer number of sweets retailers here in Saudi Arabia.  The pretty blue purse above is actually completely edible ...

... and so are these charming high heels!  These are some of the amazing offerings at Bon Bon Pastry and Chocolate, located in the Stars Avenue Mall in Jeddah.

There are tons of confection businesses in Jeddah.  Many higher end sweets shops carry signature pieces that are works of art.

Compound Common Area

Many residential expat compounds in Jeddah have a definite resort feel to them.  Common areas often include pools, tennis courts, restaurants, shopping areas, and playgrounds. Compound living offers more familiarity and comfort for western expats, however to live within the walls of compounds usually comes with a heftier price tag than living outside the compound.

Careful Where You Park

Parking in Jeddah always seems to be an after-thought.  There is definitely a parking shortage for businesses and residential areas in this city.  And then I see things like this all over, making parking even more difficult ...

Trendy Sexy Clothing

Fashion and style are very important to most Saudi women.  Here you will find the latest styles and designers you can imagine. I grew up in the age of Go Go boots and mini skirts, neither of which I was too excited about at the time, so it's always amusing to me to see fashions I would still never have worn myself back in the day.

Our World: Saudi Sandals

Saudi men's traditional leather sandals are quite distinctive in their style.  The outer edge of the toes and the heel part are open, but almost every other surface is covered.  The big toe loop covers the entire toe except for the tip.  Many of these sandals are still handmade by artisans in various South Asian countries.  The sandals are available in a wide variety of colors, designs, and price ranges.

Below is a great little short video that shows some of the artisans at work making these special sandals.  If it doesn't display correctly, try CLICKING HERE.
