Jeddah: Modern Architecture

Blue glass is a very popular choice for many of Jeddah's sleek modern buildings.  This one has particularly interesting details, like the U-shapes in descending and ascending heights and the curved shapes at the building's top.  I have to admit that I'm not much of a fan of modern architecture - and there is no shortage of it here in this city.

Pizza! Pizza! in Saudi Arabia

Pizza! Pizza! Little Caesar's is one of the many worldwide chain restaurants that we have here in Saudi Arabia.  Since women cannot drive here, most restaurants offer delivery, even fast food places like McDonalds or Burger King.

Saudi Arabia: The VIP Phenomenom

Many business signs here in KSA go overboard with the use of "VIP" in trying to attract discerning customers.  I've circled the VIP in orange on these photos so you can spot it more easily.

It doesn't really seem to matter what type of business it is, whatever they offer is definitely for VIP's.

This business sign has "VIP" all along the top and the bottom, as well as a bigger "VIP."

The above "VIP" sign is for a men's day spa.

This "VIP" Turkey Saloon is not for VIP turkeys, and it's not a saloon either.  It's a barber shop.

Another "VIP" barber shop.  VIP is usually plastered on shops that sell hookahs and other businesses that cater to men mostly.  I guess male customers like that...

SkyWatch: Jeddah Restaurant Before and After

Above is a photo of a restaurant under construction on Tahlia Street in Jeddah. I liked the Indian design with the graceful curves of the onion shaped domes.

Here is the finished design, painted in a strong cobalt blue and accented with shiny gold.  What do you think?

Saudi National Day Cake

September 23 is Saudi National Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the establishment of Saudi Arabia by Ibn Saud in 1932. Until just a few years ago, there was really not much fanfare placed on this holiday, as the religious sector were quite strict in ensuring that only two holidays were observed in the country, both of them religious holidays.  But times have changed, and Saudi citizens now openly show their patriotism in many different ways.

A popular way of showing their pride for their country has been jamming the streets with thousands of cars painted green, with young Saudi men hanging out the windows waving the green Saudi flag. However this year warnings have been published in the newspaper relaying that cars painted green for the holiday are breaking the law.  Offenders can lose their vehicle and their drivers license as well as have to pay a fine.  Not only that, citizens are encouraged to rat out violators.  Nothing like putting a little damper on some harmless fun and their show of patriotism...
