Sunken Door of Mosque

This is a door to one of the oldest mosques in Jeddah, located in the Al Balad area.  Over the centuries as the streets of the Old Town were paved and repaved, each time another layer of pavement was added on top of the existing street.  As a result the door of this mosque appears to be sunken, when in fact it is the street in front of it that has been built up.  It's become a really awkward looking way to enter the mosque.  I do however appreciate the arched detail work above the door and I love the bright orange paint.

  1. Yes, it is a beautiful old door and arch.
And its sunken appearance makes a good teaching opportunity.
You give me an idea for a similar post from here.

    1. Yes, Leif - I got back to Jeddah about three weeks ago. Haven't been out yet much, so I'm having to use some older photos that I never got around to posting - but I've got thousands of them! Nice hearing from you!

  3. What a lovely shot! It is amazing how much the street has been built up over the years.

    1. I thought it was really interesting how the street has built up too. Jeddah is almost 1500 years old - quite a few layers of street on there!

  4. Interesting shot, the color is unique the decorations on the door. Also interesting, to me at least, is the wires running out the door and up the wall.

    1. Hi Yogi - This wiring is actually very nicely done compared to the messy and dangerous wiring I have seen on many buildings in this area. In fact, I have a post coming up in the next few days that shows an example.

  6. Such a sense of history there - my city is so new there's hardly any history.
