Our World: Birthday Cake Sculpture

This is another of the whimsical sculptures of Jeddah - a birthday cake with a candle.  It is located on the traffic island of Prince Faisal bin Fahd Road, where several other of Jeddah's sculptures can be found.

    I must say that is one very interesting, eye catching sculpture. What is it commemorating? Does it light up?

      Hi Marcia - I don't believe it lights up. At night there are usually colored flood lights that light up many of the sculptures around the city. I'm not sure that it commemorates anything in particular either. It's difficult to find out specific information about many of the sculptures here in Jeddah, but there is a new book about them in the works. Right now many of the sculptures are being repaired and restored in a big multi-phase project.

    Hi Susie, this is my first time to see a blog from Saudi Arabia. My sister worked there for a few years in the Prince accounting office. She just left for NZ. She doesn't like it there because of the policies, so she cannot get many photos outside. Good for you. Are you real born in Saudi too?

      Hi Andrea - While there is a real aversion to photography by many here in Saudi Arabia, it is perfectly legal to take photos out in public. The main thing to watch out for is taking photos of government buildings and women. I am an American married to a Saudi man. I have lived here since 2007.
