There seems to be a lot more sweets shops and bakeries here in Saudi Arabia than I've noticed back home in the US. Saudis definitely like their sweets! From cookies to cakes, from macaroons to donuts, from baklava to fruit tarts - you can find it all here.
You're right about the 'sweet tooth' in the region. My friends in Dubai (Syrian, but I saw it everywhere) drank their morning tea syrupy sweet. Seems to have something to do with the 45c 80% humidity days. Helps keep the energy up. They certainly burn it off!
