Tailors at the Souk

Most souks that sell clothing or fabrics also have tailors who are ready willing and able to make alterations or clothing to order.

Crowded Shops in the Souk

Tiny shops in the souks here are usually loaded with product. I don't know how they cram so much stuff in there to display, but they manage to do it and have it look neat and organized too.

Birds and Buildings in Balad

A cloud covered dramatic sky beckons the birds snacking on the ground
A lone cyclist approaches a mosque
And toward the secrets held within the ancient buildings of Al Balad

The Beautiful Dallah

The dallah coffee pot is very distinctive with its exaggerated spout and an overall shape resembling the female form, with a waistline and bulbous hips.  It can be made out of a variety of materials, like steel, brass, silver, plastic, or even gold (used on really special occasions or by royalty).  It is a prominent part of Middle East identity and culture, representing the warm hospitality of the Arab people.

Public Prayer Rug

If one is observant when walking around the city, it is easy to spot rolled up prayer rugs outside of businesses in public, waiting to be used for the next prayer by whoever wants to use it.

Al Balad Wood Details

Al Balad is the most fascinating sector of Jeddah. It's the oldest historic part of the city.  Established in the 7th century, Jeddah's location on the Red Sea and its close proximity to Mecca and Medina ensured its importance as a major trade port as well as the gateway to Islam's holiest cities.  Several years ago Jeddah was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, securing its preservation and protection for future generations to enjoy.

Decorative Cover

This piece in a housewares shop caught my eye.  I love the detailing.  It is some type of large serving piece that has its own stand.

Redhead in the Mall

Taken one day in the mall a few months ago, this photo shows a couple of Saudi women walking by with a red headed little girl. The women are wearing the type of ultra conservative all black abaya that is one piece from the head to the toes and totally hides the female form - even the shoulders are not visible. Most women choose abayas that are more like a dress or coat with a separate scarf to cover the hair.

Traditional men's clothing is available from baby sizes to adult.  There is nothing cuter than seeing a toddler dressed up in a Saudi man's traditional clothing!

Scarf Shop Displays

Many shops here in Jeddah sell only one single product - like scarves.  I never was a scarf person, but I sure love the displays here, and now I own more scarves than I ever imagined I would.

Abaya Detergent

Laundry detergents especially for black abayas - there are so many brands, it's unbelievable. This is just a small sample of an entire aisle of abaya detergent in one shop.

Souk Shopping

Even though lingerie shops are supposed to be staffed by women, there are still plenty of other small shops in souks that employ men in those positions. Since these shops also sell clothing items for men and children too, they are allowed to keep salesmen in these positions.

I've seen lots of funny videos lately of people making face masks out of brassieres. Have you seen any?  Hope you all are doing well with this CoronaVirus Twilight Zone we are all living.

Al Balad Old Home Entrance

This old building in historic Al Balad has a really interesting decorative facade.  It was an original family home in the old part of the city.  Many of the older buildings in Al Balad are being rescued and restored.

Jeddah Cool Building

I'm not sure what this building is in the Al Balad section of Jeddah, but I really like the unusual rounded shape, the glass and the windows.

CDP Theme Day - Jeddah Pre-School

Before this whole coronavirus pandemic affected the whole world, I was fortunate to attend the International Day event at Bear Hugs Preschool here in Jeddah.  Bear Hugs has been in operation in the Al Hamra District of Jeddah since 2003 and has a very diverse international staff as well as students.

The staff and students obviously put a lot of effort and thought into making this event the roaring success that it was.  Each class had adopted a country to learn about, and the students dressed up in costumes representing each country.

In the school's lovely outdoor courtyard area, each class had prepared a space showing facts, traditions, and clothing from each country represented.

The adorable students were rightfully proud of what they had learned.  Dozens of moms attended the standing room only event.  The festivities were kicked off with a parade of the preschoolers (ages 2-6) wearing their costumes and waving flags as they made their way through the packed courtyard.

The parade was followed by a show with the students singing and performing for the beaming moms in the audience.  I was very impressed with the upbeat and happy school, its administrators, teachers, and students.  It was a lovely morning and I'm very happy to have been invited to see the school and attend this fun colorful celebration.
