SkyWatch - Mosque on a Moonlit Night

A beautiful crescent moon graces the early evening sky in Al Balad, the oldest sector of the city of Jeddah.

Al Balad is very lively in the evenings, with many souks and shoppers, each block offering different scents from the smells of freshly baked bread to the spicy smells of earthy incense.

I like the sharp decorative points beneath the top of this mosque's minaret.  They seem to be protecting it to me. 

SkyWatch: Crescent Moon Minaret Topper

Most Muslims claim there are no symbols of Islam, however most mosque minarets are topped with a crescent moon.  There is no doubt that the crescent moon is significant in Islam.  Its sighting marks the beginning and end of the fasting month of Ramadan.  It is also featured on the flags of many Muslim countries, along with a five point star.

Sky Watch: Crescent Moon Minaret Topper

I always get miffed when Muslims insist to me that the crescent moon is not a symbol of Islam.  Here in Saudi Arabia, just about every mosque with a minaret is topped off with a crescent moon.  The insistence that it is not a symbol of Islam is beyond me ...

While most Muslims I've spoken to insist that the crescent moon is not a "symbol" of Islam, it continues to appear atop most mosque's minarets - so I don't exactly understand why they insist that it's not a "symbol" of the religion.  The crescent moon is an important aspect of the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims are required to fast every day during the daylight hours from sunrise until sunset.  The sighting of the crescent moon signals the end of the month of Ramadan. 

Every day one can hear the calls to prayer from the nearby mosques, which are broadcast five times daily in every direction through a speaker system which is often attached to the minarets, as you can see in the photo.
