SAUDI ARABIA'S NEED FOR PRIVACY

PRIVACY EXTENSIONS ARE NOTICEABLE ALL OVER JEDDAH.

HUGE SCREENS ARE ATTACHED ATOP ALREADY TALL WALLS FOR ADDITIONAL PRIVACY.  THE REASON FOR THIS IS TO AFFORD THE WOMEN OF THE RESIDENCE THE LUXURY OF BEING OUTSIDE WITHOUT THEIR HAIR AND BODIES BEING PROPERLY COVERED ACCORDING TO THIS CULTURE.  THE UNSIGHTLY SCREENS ARE SUPPOSED TO SHIELD ANY PRYING EYES FROM NEIGHBORING BUILDINGS FROM GAZING UPON WOMEN WHO ARE NOT RELATED TO THEM.

Saudi Arabia Holiday Decor

There are not outward signs of the Christmas season here in Saudi Arabia. but in the privacy of their own homes, Christians can decorate and celebrate.  This cute golden camel decorated with shiny ornaments was on display at a friend's home.  I thought it was really cute.

Family villas surrounded by tall walls afford much sought after privacy.

Many private villas in Saudi Arabia have outdoor areas that are surrounded by tall walls for the privacy of the family.  This villa has a large garden with a trampoline for the kids.

SkyWatch: Jeddah Villa Neighbor

Privacy is a major concern in Saudi Arabia, hence the high walls around every villa.  I doubt that the owner of this villa is happy about the highrise building being built right next door.

This is a shot of a very typical single family villa of Jeddah.  All villas completely enclosed by tall walls.  Many walls have upward extensions for additional privacy from neighboring buildings, as you can see here on the left.

SkyWatch: Out of Focus Villa

This is another in my "Out of Focus" series.  Even though it's not in focus, I love how the open gate reveals a little of what is inside this walled villa and that it's a little more in focus than the rest of the photo.  Another pic shot at the end of the day when the sky glows before retreating into darkness.

Jeddah: Welcoming Gate

I'm attracted to gates and doorways no matter where I am in the world.  This one caught my eye.  I think the vegetation adds a lot to its appeal.  All private villas here have tall walls and gates for privacy.

Corner Villa

Many private villas in Jeddah could be called mansions.  All villas are surrounded by high walls for privacy.  Many Saudi families have lots of kids and they often live together with extended family members like grandparents. 

Jeddah: Stately Villa Gate

Many of the villa gates of Jeddah stand out and make a statement.  They range from grand to flamboyant to stately to fancy and on and on.  This one has the sides and topper made of beautiful thick marble which matches the walls.  I always wonder about the gates with a topper over them like this one though.  A larger moving truck possibly wouldn't be able to fit through this gate's opening, so I wonder about the practicality.

Skywatch: Pretty Walled Villa

Single family residences in Jeddah are always surrounded by high privacy walls.  Some of the villas have landscaped inner courtyards behind the walls, and others barely have enough room between the outer wall and the wall of the house to walk. Many courtyards I have been in are completely tiled.  The large trees provide additional privacy from the neighboring villa.

Jeddah: Villa Walls

Residential villas of Jeddah are very private and always surrounded by tall solid walls.

I would rather see the villa itself than the walls around it.

The walls do enable the women of the house to spend time outside without their abayas on and without covering their hair.

Lovely Jeddah Villa

This is another typical villa in Jeddah.  This one is rather unusual because of its darker color.  Most villas are white here or a light color.  I think this one looks quite nice though despite its darker color.  I also like the greenery.

Private dwellings in Jeddah are all surrounded by high walls for privacy.  Some villas have private courtyards so the residents can enjoy being outdoors, but many have very little outdoor space because the villa itself occupies so much of the land area.

This is an older villa with a metal gate which has a sun design on it.  Private villas in Saudi Arabia are always completely enclosed by tall walls for privacy.

Private villas in Jeddah are surrounded by high walls for privacy that completely surround the property. The gates to the villas are all very distinctive and prominent. Most villas have an area within the walls where the women can go to be outside but cannot be seen from outside the walls.
