"The Supplication" is one of Jeddah's most well-known sculptures and symbolizes praying to God with open hands. Crafted of marble by Mahmoud Banar, this sculpture is one of many that come under the theme of religion. The base has an inscription from the Q'uran written in Arabic that says:
"O my Lord! Expand me my breast; Ease my task for me."
I love this. It is so important.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I think some would translate 'sadr' to 'patience' , so it would mean ' god give me more patience.' But i love your translation susie, i am sure more women pray for bigger 'breasts'. lol

DeleteI am always amazed at how badly hands look in sculptures. These hands just look wrong to me.
ReplyDeleteHi Jerry - Actually there are two famous hand sculptures here in Jeddah - this one and one called The Fist. Personally I would rather see a full body sculpture than just body parts.

ReplyDeleteActually his last name is bannat and he was a very well known artist with many sculptures in Jeddah and around the world. The city of Jeddah ended up not paying him for his last work of art and after a dispute has tried to minimize his presence. He has since passed away and his creative mind will be very much missed.
