I'm always fascinated with the business signs here in Jeddah. Many are written in both English and Arabic, but others just have Arabic. I have been told that there is a law that business signs here cannot be only in English. Many of the signs that are only in Arabic often have graphics which show what type of business it is, but not always. I've posted several times about the VIP phenomenon used frequently in this country, and you can see that on the blue sign with yellow and white Arabic script, the only thing written in English is "VIP."
The business sign that really stands out in this photo is the super-colorful one with the banners hanging down at the bottom of the sign. Those festive banners are commonly used for holidays in this area of the world.

I find the VIP label to be off putting, actually. It smacks of desperation.
I agree, William. I see it used so much here - it means absolutely nothing. And you should see some of the shops that have VIP on them. I wouldn't consider them VIP by any means!
