Unexpected Product Packaging

I've seen this tea in the supermarket here in Jeddah many times.  Al Kbous is a Yemeni company with a tea factory here in Saudi Arabia.

I've always wondered why the image on the package is of a graduate. I couldn't find any information about this choice of image on their website, but ironically enough, I did find many grammatical errors on their page.

Very Saudi Architecture

Geometric shapes and patterns are often incorporated into very distinctively Saudi designs.  Geometry is a hugh part of Islamic art.  The designs adorning this restaurant are not as intricate as typical geometric Islamic art but none-the-less, one can quickly identify this style as Saudi.

Jeddah "VIP" Shop with Misspelled Sign

One would think that a shop for VIPs would make sure that their business sign was spelled correctly.

Going through my old photos since I'm not getting out much these days. These are pics of Valentine's Day displays in a chocolate shop from a few years ago.

Yummy Felafel

Felafel is a favorite vegetarian Middle Eastern food, made of ground legumes and vegetables, like chick peas, fava beans, scalions, garlic, and parsley. The ground up mixture is formed into ball shapes and then deep fried, but they can also be oven baked.  Most often they are eaten in a pita sandwich, stuffed with things like tomatoes, pickles, cucumbers, peppers, and tahini sauce.

Jeddah Airport Road Sign

Jeddah's airport has four terminals - North, South, New, and Hajj.  Right now due to the Corona Virus, all international flights have been suspended indefinitely.  Some domestic flights resumed a few weeks ago.  The annual Hajj pilgrimage, when Muslims around the world travel to Saudi Arabia's holy cities of Makkah and Medina, will be different this year. Only Muslims who are already within Saudi Arabia will be allowed to attend in an attempt to curb the virus.

Jeddah Security

Schools, government buildings, and residential compounds in Saud Arabia all have high security measures in place.  Many appear to be fortresses, with 24 hour armed guards, barriers and gates, tall surrounding cement walls topped with barbed wire coils, visitor IDs required, and camera surveillance.

Middle East Lanterns

On one of our recent rare outings to buy groceries and to purchase hair clippers so I can start cutting my husband's hair, I saw these beautiful lanterns at SACO.  I'm a big sucker for lanterns like this - but I didn't get one.

Jeddah Masked Street Vendor

As I understand it, a fine of 1000sr (more than $250 US) is imposed for anyone in Saudi Arabia who is out in public without a face mask.

The Saudi Man's Headdress

All over the Middle East, headgear is an important component of the traditional man's uniform.  Underneath the scarf is a small white cap called keffiyah which anchors the scarf and keeps it from slipping. Men in Saudi Arabia most commonly wear the red and white checkered scarf (shemagh) or a plain white scarf (ghutra), although there are many other colors and patterns available. They have been a part of the Middle Eastern man's fashion for a long long time, originally worn to protect from sandstorms and the hot sun.

The square scarf is folded in half into a triangle shape.  The scarf is then placed on the head with the two longer points on the left and right and the remaining point to the center back.  The black ring called egal is placed on top to hold the scarf down and keep it in place.

There are so many ways a man can style his scarf! Some wear it hanging straigh down, others like to flip the sides to the back, or maybe flipped up over the top.  There is not just one way of wearing it.

Jeddah Anti-Littering Graphic

Going through my old photos, since we haven't been out much with this Corona isolation - An anti-littering graphic adorning the side of a delivery truck in Jeddah that I photographed a few years ago.

Strolling Along in Jeddah

This is a fairly common sight here in Jeddah - an African woman pushing a baby stroller filled with products that they sell on the street or others that are transporting useful items they have picked out of garbage bins.

Jeddah's Dallah Fountain

This well known fountain on Sultan Road in Jeddah consists of more than 20 dallah coffee pots arranged on pedestals at varying heights.  I've actually seen it functioning as a fountain a few times but most often it's not operating.  It's difficult to get a good photo of it because of its location in the middle of the road separating the lanes of traffic.
To see a better photo than this one and to learn more about the fountain itself, CLICK HERE.

Jeddah Boat Sculpture - Now Gone

Jeddah is home to hundreds of works of art that grace the landscape of the city.  Many of the sculptures used to occupy the space in the center of traffic circles, many of which have been replaced in recent years with bridges, tunnels, or normal intersections with stoplights.  Some of the sculptures have been moved to different spots off to the side in the same intersection or to totally different locations around Jeddah.  Still other sculptures have not survived, like this one.
This boat sculpture was one of the largest sculptures of this metropolis on the Red Sea. The ship's sails actually spelled "Allah."
I have to admit, this sculpture was not one of my favorites, so I'm not too torn up about it being gone now.  I found it odd looking and when it needed to be repainted, it looked pretty tacky.

Saudi Arabia Patriotism in Business

Saudis are very proud of their country and businesses often show their patriotism by displaying photos of the rulers or the Saudi flag.

Jeddah Apartment Buildings

Many apartment buildings on main streets in Jeddah have business space on the ground level and living quarters on the upper floors, as seen in the first photo. Buildings located off the main streets generally do not offer retail space on the lower level, but instead usually have parking or a lobby.

Pre-Corona Bastah Market

Back in January of this year, before the Corona-virus scare really took hold, the seasonal Bastah Market was well attended here in Jeddah.

Saudi Arabia has been in various forms of lockdown now for almost three months. What a huge difference in the entire world in just the past few months!

Blue Glass Reflection

I really like the composition of this photo taken in Al Balad - the blue glass facade, the varying sizes and placement of the windows, the streetlight that just came on at dusk, and the reflection of the building across the street. I think it would make a very difficult puzzle if it were turned into one!

I Heart Saudia

At the top of the escalator, I looked back and liked the lines and composition of what I saw. As many times as I have been there, I hadn't ever really noticed the curve of the stairs on the right with the calories written on the face of the risers.  I've always been a fan of the "I Heart Saudi" lit up in green and red. The lines of the escalator and the lines of colored tiles on the floor all work together and give this photo movement and lead to places for your eyes to look.

Saudi Phone Case

There are many regional phone case covers to choose from here in Saudi Arabia. Some are patriotic, some are religious, while others are whimsical. This one has the Saudi symbolism of the palm tree and the crossed swords.

Combined Architectural Elements

This villa has quite a variety of different architectural design elements and finishes. There is so much to look at!  I'm not sure I quite understand the unusual angled white overhang in front, and the use of so many different materials is overwhelming.
