Our World: Menswear Shops

It's not unusual in Saudi Arabia to find similar shops and businesses congregated in one area, one after the other.  Here are two traditional Saudi menswear shops right next door to each other.  I know that in the USA this is generally not done and is actually written in to the rental contracts that similar businesses will not be allowed within the same shopping plaza. What is the norm for your part of the world?

In NYC you used to see concentrations of similar stores. There was radio row, replaced by the World Trade Center, there was quite a few books stores near the last remaining old book seller, Strand Books, and there was quite a few camera stores near Macy's. All of these are gone now, but that was how business was done in the past.

Here it's not done either. Makes more business sense. You might have, in a mall, a suit dealer next to a casual wear shop, but that's two different clientele. The same applies to women's clothing, where in one shop you might have business attire, and across the hall there might be women's athletics clothing.

It seems to be happening more and more where I live, especially with mattress stores.

That is interesting, direct mano y mano competition.

This was the way of clustering similar small businesses and even workshops, e.g. shoes, furniture, in the olden days and you can still see it in the older sections of our cities. I find it quite convenient for shoppers if you are looking for a certain thing.
