SkyWatch: Regal Restaurant

Many people and businesses here in Saudi Arabia like to show their loyalty and respect for the Saudi monarchy by adorning their businesses or vehicles with images of the king.

Your blog is so interesting, I always look forward to each post. I don't usually comment, but this photo has grabbed my curiosity. I often see images like this about Saudi, and I often wonder if the Saudi 'Monarchy' are happy to see huge photos of themselves displayed like this. It is as if the people who display them really worship them..something very forbidden in Islam, no matter how 'good' the human being may be. I ask my Saudi friends here about it but they seem offended, as if I am personally attacking their king. Anyway, keep the great photos coming, I enjoy all of them!

Hi Anonymous - Thanks for your comment. Your points are issues that I have wondered about and questioned since my arrival here. I have questioned this practice because I see the king's image literally everywhere. I'm sure that this is not demanded or expected by the king himself. And to me it does smack of idol worship, which is against the tenants of Islam. I think it has more to do with the practice of "wasta," or greasing one's palms in the hopes of gaining favor. That's just my guess...

I also find this very odd, particularly given the zeal the country has for destroying monuments connected with historical figures from Islam.
