END OF RAMADAN

Another Ramadan ends today. Eid Mubarak to all my Muslim friends!

Dates are often eaten to break the fast at the end of the day during Ramadan.

During Ramadan many shops are closed during the day, they but do a thriving business at night.

RAMADAN DECOR FOR HOME

In addition to businesses, many homes are also decorated during the Ramadan observance.

Since I moved to Saudi Arabia in 2007, I have seen a huge increase in the variety of Ramadan decorations available in stores.

RAMADAN DECOR FOR BUSINESSES

Ramadan tentatively starts tomorrow (scientifically depending on the moon) and will run through the entire month of April.  Ramadan is the religious observance for Muslims when they are required to fast during the daylight hours of each day for a whole month.  No food or drink can pass through their lips from sun-up to sundown. In fact smoking and sex are also restricted as well.  It is a time for reflection, feeling closer to God/Allah, and assisting with the needs of people not as fortunate.  Many businesses spruce up with banners, lights, and other Ramadan decor.

Ramadan Shopping Mall Windows

Ramadan is a month long observance when Muslims fast during the daylight hours.  When the sun goes down each day, they break their fast and can eat and drink until the next morning right before dawn.  Many Muslims in Saudi Arabia actually reverse their days and nights and tend to sleep during the day when they are fasting and then stay up all night long when they can eat.  I don't believe this is a common practise in other Muslim countries.

These are some more samples of window displays of Ramadan Greetings in shops in a local mall here in Jeddah.

OurWorld - Ramadan Serving Dishes

Ramadan will be starting soon, and there are hints of its arrival all over.  Ramadan is Islam's holy month when Muslims fast during the day.  Over the years, Ramadan seems to have become more commercialized, much like Christmas has in the west, with Ramadan themed dishes, lighting, decorations, and other items available.

Here are a few of the crescent moon shaped serving dishes I saw recently at Al Nawras Housewares Shop at Shatie Souk.  The crescent moon is significant for Ramadan in that its sighting marks the beginning and then also the end of the Ramadan season.

Ramadan Begins - Ramadan Mubarak!

Ramadan is the annual monthlong Islamic observance of fasting during daylight hours.  It's a time for families eating together, especially for Iftar, the meal that breaks the fast at the end of each day.

As the month of Ramadan begins, I wish you all peace, love, and a Happy Ramadan - Ramadan Mubarak!

Ramadan Mubarak

RAMADAN MUBARAK to all my Muslim friends around the world! I wish you peace and happiness.
For those of you who are not Muslim, Ramadan is the holy month when Muslims fast from sun-up until sundown. Fasting includes abstaining from everything, such as food, drink, no sex, and no smoking. The purpose of Ramadan is to bring Muslims closer to God and the fasting gives Muslims a greater appreciation for the blessings they have and more empathy for those who are less fortunate.
