SAUDI ARABIA'S NEED FOR PRIVACY

PRIVACY EXTENSIONS ARE NOTICEABLE ALL OVER JEDDAH.

HUGE SCREENS ARE ATTACHED ATOP ALREADY TALL WALLS FOR ADDITIONAL PRIVACY.  THE REASON FOR THIS IS TO AFFORD THE WOMEN OF THE RESIDENCE THE LUXURY OF BEING OUTSIDE WITHOUT THEIR HAIR AND BODIES BEING PROPERLY COVERED ACCORDING TO THIS CULTURE.  THE UNSIGHTLY SCREENS ARE SUPPOSED TO SHIELD ANY PRYING EYES FROM NEIGHBORING BUILDINGS FROM GAZING UPON WOMEN WHO ARE NOT RELATED TO THEM.

Jeddah Opaque Villa Gates

Private residences here in Jeddah are always surrounded by tall walls, which means they all require gates as well.  Privacy is of the utmost importance to Saudis. The inner courtyard allows the women of the house an outdoor space where they do not have to cover their hair and don't have to wear an abaya without the fear of being seen not being properly covered. 

The walls and gates are an important feature of the overall design of the stately homes, as they are the first impression one has of a place.  The gates are made of metal, wood, or wrought iron with opaque sheeting that allows the light through.

Here is another typical villa in Jeddah - large residence and tall walls surrounding it.

Family villas in Jeddah are usually quite large to accommodate large families, plus household help like maids and drivers.  All villas that I have ever seen here are surrounded by high walls to afford privacy for the women of the family.  Also notice the wall extension on the left which adds more height to the already tall wall for even more privacy from any prying eyes from the neighbors.

This particular villa seems to be a combination of different architectural styles that aren't generally used together in the same design - I've never seen castle-like rounded turrets paired together with tall columns.

Combined Architectural Elements

This villa has quite a variety of different architectural design elements and finishes. There is so much to look at!  I'm not sure I quite understand the unusual angled white overhang in front, and the use of so many different materials is overwhelming.

Variety of Villas

The above villas are actually the same architectural designs, just reversed, but because of the difference in the color of windows, they don't really look the same.

Not much of the front of this villa is visible because of all the large palm trees outside its walls.

I believe this is a duplex villa.

Jeddah Corner Villa

I love the trimmed bushes around the walls of this enormous corner villa in Jeddah.  I think it all works together quite well and is very attractive.

Stately villas here in Jeddah are almost always surrounded by tall walls for privacy.  I really like the  details of the columns and the elegant gates.

Jeddah Bird Wall Mosaic

Continuing on from yesterday's post, here are some photos that show the walls and environment of the beautiful mosaics on the walls of a lovely family villa in Jeddah.

There are many little nooks along the walls as well, such as this, where workers can take a break or eat their lunches in the shade.

The palm trees, bougainvillea, and other tropical vegetation enhance the beauty of the mosaics.

I believe the walls of the villa extend along two sides of the block.  The grounds inside must be fairly large.
