SAUDI ARABIA'S NEED FOR PRIVACY

PRIVACY EXTENSIONS ARE NOTICEABLE ALL OVER JEDDAH.
HUGE SCREENS ARE ATTACHED ATOP ALREADY TALL WALLS FOR ADDITIONAL PRIVACY.  THE REASON FOR THIS IS TO AFFORD THE WOMEN OF THE RESIDENCE THE LUXURY OF BEING OUTSIDE WITHOUT THEIR HAIR AND BODIES BEING PROPERLY COVERED ACCORDING TO THIS CULTURE.  THE UNSIGHTLY SCREENS ARE SUPPOSED TO SHIELD ANY PRYING EYES FROM NEIGHBORING BUILDINGS FROM GAZING UPON WOMEN WHO ARE NOT RELATED TO THEM.

JEDDAH RANDOM PHOTOS

Business signs here are often written in both Arabic and English - so it's actually unusual to see 3 signs next to one another without English on them.

Watermelon season in Jeddah - lots for sale out of trucks and cars on the side of the road.

Pale pink doors - one for tall people, and one for short people.  LOL!

Jeddah Opaque Villa Gates

Private residences here in Jeddah are always surrounded by tall walls, which means they all require gates as well.  Privacy is of the utmost importance to Saudis. The inner courtyard allows the women of the house an outdoor space where they do not have to cover their hair and don't have to wear an abaya without the fear of being seen not being properly covered.

The walls and gates are an important feature of the overall design of the stately homes, as they are the first impression one has of a place.  The gates are made of metal, wood, or wrought iron with opaque sheeting that allows the light through.

SkyWatch - Gate Replica in Jeddah

In the olden days, Jeddah was a small fishing village built along the Red Sea.  There were three different roads leading to the city, from the north, south, and east - and the Red Sea borders Jeddah to the west.  Jeddah was surrounded and protected by a large wall which encompassed the whole city, except where the sea was.  The three roads to Jeddah had large gates through which people entered or departed the city.

Shortly after oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia in 1938, Jeddah began to grow much more rapidly and eventually its walls had to be torn down because of Jeddah's expansion.  Now modern Jeddah has several replicated gates around the city as reminders of the past.

A pretty sky and a lovely grand gate, somewhere near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Jeddah Rusty Door

I know it's not much to look at, but I actually love this photo of a rusty old door on a dilapidated building here in Jeddah.  I love the rusted metal door, the old tire leaning up against the building, the paint peeling off the walls, and even the small pile of gravel to the left.  Old metal doors like this one are very common on many older buildings in this city.

Our World - Jeddah Palace Gate at Night

Swathed in blue light, this palace gate on a main road in Jeddah looks inviting and appealing.  I apologize for the poor quality - this photo was taken while zooming by in a car at night.  It actually came out better than most!

Jeddah Walled Villa

Stately villas here in Jeddah are almost always surrounded by tall walls for privacy.  I really like the  details of the columns and the elegant gates.

Our World: Gender Segregated Gates

As many times as I've been to this beach resort north of Jeddah, I've never seen anyone adhere to these gender segregating signs indicating that men and women need to use separate gates a few feet apart...

Jeddah Unfinished Building's Gate

A pretty wrought iron entry gate contrasts with the building's unfinished exterior in Jeddah.

Jeddah: Villa's Wooden Gate

Wood doesn't wear very well in the hot dusty climate of Jeddah, so it's unusual to see wooden gates such as this one.  Most gates are made of metal here.  Paint also doesn't bode well in this climate either, so most often buildings are finished with tiles or stone.

Jeddah Villa Arched Gates

Many family villas in Saudi Arabia take up most of the space of the lots they are built on, with very limited outside space around the villas. Many also utilize the rooftop area as play areas for the children or for leisure activities in the winter months when the weather is more tolerable.  Rooftops in Jeddah are mostly flat since there is very little annual rainfall.

I like the arches above the gates of this home as well as the opaque material that lets light through but affords privacy at the same time. I also like the red tiles above the wall and gates that finish it off nicely.
