JEDDAH WEDDING - WHAT TO WEAR?

WOMEN'S EVENING WEAR CAN BE FOUND EVERYWHERE

READY TO WEAR OR CUSTOM TAILORED

If a woman cannot find an evening gown to her liking off the rack to wear to that special wedding, fabric shops are plentiful and are staffed with seasoned tailors.  Women can select their fabrics and may be armed with photos of the style dress she wants.  All the trimmings are also selected, such as beading, buttons, lace, feathers, or many more embellishments in all colors.

The Saudi weddings I've attended are simply jaw dropping - from the decorations, lighting, and floral arrangements, to the gowns, high heels, make-up, and accessories - not to mention the unbelievable feast that is often not served until 3am.  Have a look at a post I did a couple years ago for a rare peek inside a Saudi Wedding.

Jeddah Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  Here in Saudi Arabia, an issue that used to be swept under the carpet is now front and center to educate women about it.  The familiar pink ribbon is prominently on display in many businesses that ater to female clientele here in Jeddah.

With 55% of cases diagnosed here in the late stage of the disease, breast cancer is the #1 leading cause of death in Saudi women.  Another problem is that studies show that breast cancer tends to affect younger Saudi women at higher rates than it does in females from Western countries. Therefore education and early detection ares of the utmost importance.

This year's campaign in the kingdom is promoting online workshops and lectures featuring surviving women who have had first hand experience with the disease as well as health care professionals sharing their knowledge. There are also some events being held and promotional materials displayed in malls and on billboards.

Saudi Arabia Sans Abaya

I see more and more women walking around without abayas now.  As long as women are appropriately covered, the abaya doesn't have to be the "uniform" of women when out in public nowadays.  The religious police are no longer a presence to get after women for exposing their ankles or not covering their hair like a few short years ago.  The times they are a'changing!

Jeddah Variety of Women's Wear

Saudi women generally pray at home. Usually they put on a prayer dress on top of what they are wearing. The prayer dress is a loose long simple dress that extends down to the floor, has long sleeves, a high neckline, and may have a hood attached to cover the hair.  These prayer outfits are usually made of a soft thin cotton fabric in a variety of colors and prints.

This shop sells women's wear, including prayer dresses, abayas, and scarves.  The last photo of this post was taken in the same shopping plaza as the others.  I can't imagine ever wearing anything like it, even in my younger days, but maybe there are some women who might wear this in the privacy of their own homes.

Saudi Arabia Graphics

Saudi Arabian National Day is tomorrow, and this first sign in a shop window is in reference to the holiday.  Many shops are having big sales to celebrate.

This photo is at an open air mall here in Jeddah and is signage indicating a female changing room.

On a pole on a road divider are celebratory signs for Saudi National Day

This last photo display also references Saudi Arabian National Day. Saudi Arabia celebrates its 90th birthday on September 23rd.
