Business signs here are often written in both Arabic and English - so it's actually unusual to see 3 signs next to one another without English on them.  

Watermelon season in Jeddah - lots for sale out of trucks and cars on the side of the road.

Pale pink doors - one for tall people, and one for short people.  LOL!

 

Jeddah Fresh Produce Street Vendor

The street vendors have handmade wooden carts on big wheels that they push themselves down the street. I'm sure they are quite heavy. Many of them attach a big colorful umbrella for shade.  

Jeddah Fruit & Veggie Market

There are many small open air fresh produce markets all over Jeddah.  My husband likes to shop at these smaller markets for produce because it's generally much cheaper than buying the exact same thing at a big supermarket. 

Lots of times we just drive up and don't even need to get out of the car.  The workers take our order, collect our items and put them right into the car.  It's convenient and easy.

Jeddah Produce Market

This is a typical display in a small neighborhood outdoor produce market here in Jeddah.  These markets are conveniently located in residential areas and the produce is generally cheaper than buying it from a large air conditioned supermarket.

Planting Baobab Trees in Jeddah

Lately I have seen several new plantings of baobab trees around the city of Jeddah.  Called the "Tree of Life," the baobab tree is native to the drier regions of Arabia, Africa, Australia, and Madagascar. It is quite an unusual looking tree with an enormous trunk, where it stores lots of water.  Except for a few short months of the year, the baobab tree is leafless and appears as though its roots are sticking up in the air. 

It is known as the Tree of Life for several reasons. It can provide not only water, but food and shelter.  The tree is fire resistant and its cork-like bark can be used for making cloth and rope.  Its leaves are used as an ingredient in soups and there are claims that they have medicinal value.  The baobab fruit is edible and is very high in Vitamin C. Its fruit is called "Monkey Bread" and is described as having a velvety exterior and is about the size of a coconut.

Since it can store hundreds of liters of water, in times of drought the tree can be tapped.  Older trees are often hollowed out to provide homes for animals or humans, and some are even used as shops.  I'm rather excited to see these plantings mature and follow their progress!

Durian Fruit

I don't believe I've ever seen durian fruit in the US, but it is readily available here in Saudi Arabia. It is very popular in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.  Aside from its obviously unusual appearance consisting of a thorn covered outer skin, the smell of the fruit inside is also quite pungent and unpleasant to many. It can grow to be almost as large as a football.  Its strong lingering odor gives the durian the distinction of being banished from many hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia. 

Our World - Hub-Hub for Sale

Springtime in Saudi Arabia brings a variety of fresh produce in some of the fertile regions of the country.  The watermelon yield this year was abundant, and vendors well their melons at the side of the road from pickup trucks. The young boys above are shown helping out, while the older men below find time for socializing while waiting for customers.

Jeddah Watermelon Season

It's watermelon season again in Saudi Arabia.  More rainfall than usual fell this past winter, so the fresh produce is abundant. These vendors sell their melons from the back of their pickup trucks off the side of the road.  In this area of Saudi Arabia, watermelon is called "Hub-Hub."

I'm drawn to these street vendors in Jeddah who sell a wide variety of fresh produce. I love how many of them set up a colorful umbrella for protection from the hot sun and spread out a carpet where they can sit and wait for customers.

It's no secret that I'm fascinated with the fresh produce markets here in Saudi Arabia.  The sheer quantity and size of some of the produce is amazing, not to mention the variety and the amount of edible vegetables that I have never been exposed to before.

Aren't these old wooden handmade crates cool?  I wonder how long it takes to make one of these by hand?
