ARABIAN TEAPOT & DALLAH

Tea is a huge part of Arab culture.  Guests are always offered tea or Arabic coffee (called gahwa), which is traditionally served in mini teacups.  

The dallah is easily identified by its long graceful exaggerated spout.  It has been around for centuries.  The serving of tea and gahwa is a deeply embedded tradition of Arabian culture, which shows their hospitality and generosity.

Jeddah's Dallah Fountain

This well known fountain on Sultan Road in Jeddah consists of more than 20 dallah coffee pots arranged on pedestals at varying heights.  I've actually seen it functioning as a fountain a few times but most often it's not operating.  It's difficult to get a good photo of it because of its location in the middle of the road separating the lanes of traffic.

The Beautiful Dallah

The dallah coffee pot is very distinctive with its exaggerated spout and an overall shape resembling the female form, with a waistline and bulbous hips.  It can be made out of a variety of materials, like steel, brass, silver, plastic, or even gold (used on really special occasions or by royalty).  It is a prominent part of Middle East identity and culture, representing the warm hospitality of the Arab people.   

Jeddah Memories of Days Gone By

Al Balad is the oldest sector of Jeddah where a largescale effort to preserve Saudi culture and heritage is ongoing.  Several old family homes have been restored and are open to visitors.  Above a family of antique dallah pots sits on a ledge in front of an arched Arabesque geometrical window design. 

The fabrics of traditional Saudi style seating is often red geometric designs.  I adore the Middle Eastern hanging lamps. They are everywhere here.

I've never seen a sewing machine like this one, have you?  I've seen some really interesting old antiques machines, products, and kitchen gadgets here in Saudi Arabia.
