I've posted many photos over the years of the fascinating sculptures of Jeddah. Some can no longer be found, as they did not fare well in the brutal elements of this place.  You can see more of these sculptures by clicking on the Sculptures tab under my header at the top.  You will be amazed at the wide varietyof sculpture this city has.

JEDDAH'S BEAUTIFUL SUNFLOWER FIELD FOUNTAIN

One of the few large artworks in the city of Jeddah that was actually created by a female, the Sunflower Field Fountain is one of my absolute favorites.  The artist is Eila Hiltunen, an accomplished sculptor from Finland.  Standing in a lagoon along the Corniche next to the Red Sea, the corrosion resistant stainless steel fountains consists of seven elegant larger than life sunflowers.

Most times when I have driven by over the years, the fountain is usually not operating, so I was thrilled to see it spraying recently on a Friday morning.  The photos do not capture the richness of the shimmering gold colors shining in the sun that are much more vibrant when the fountain is spraying.  It was magical seeing the fountain working!

Jeddah's Dallah Fountain

This well known fountain on Sultan Road in Jeddah consists of more than 20 dallah coffee pots arranged on pedestals at varying heights.  I've actually seen it functioning as a fountain a few times but most often it's not operating.  It's difficult to get a good photo of it because of its location in the middle of the road separating the lanes of traffic.

Jeddah Waterfront Park

Jeddah's Waterfront Park runs along the Red Sea coastline for 4.5 km. It opened in November 2017 and is one of Jeddah's most popular attractions. There is something for everyone there.

SkyWatch - Yes, It's Really a Fountain!

In the eleven years that I have lived in Jeddah, yesterday was the first day I have EVER seen the spectacular Sunflower Field Fountain actually spraying water!  Of course I don't get to drive by it every day, so I'm sure it probably sprays other times when I am not around.  But needless to say, I was very excited to see it operating.  The fountain sits in a lagoon along Jeddah's Corniche which runs along the Red Sea coastline. 

Surprisingly enough, a female artist was responsible for this lovely public art installation.  Eila Hiltunen, a Finnish sculptress, designed the fountain in the 1980s. The fountain contains seven graceful and whimsical perky sunflowers made of non-corrosive stainless steel to withstand effects from the harsh environment of Jeddah, such as the extreme heat, humidity, wind, dust and the salty sea air.

I couldn't get very good photos of the fountain because we were zooming by in a car, but I'm pretty happy with the pics I did get.

Jeddah Fountain on the Red Sea

I don't have any information about the artist who designed this lovely modern fountain that was incorporated into Jeddah's now one year old new waterfront.  But it is a welcome addition and is really quite lovely.

Jeddah's Sunflower Field Fountain at Dusk

The Sunflowers Fountain is one of my favorite sculptures in Jeddah.  I have never once seen the fountain in operation however - so I'm not sure if it's broken or what the problem with it is.  It sits in the middle of a lagoon near the Corniche which runs along the Red Sea coastline.  This graceful work of art is one of the few art pieces made for the city of Jeddah that is credited to a woman.  Eila Hiltunen was a Finnish sculptor who designed this stainless steel fountain in the 1980s. Her most famous artwork is the Sibelius Monument, located in Helsinki.

Jeddah's King Fahd Fountain

Today's post features four photos of the world's tallest fountain, King Fahd's Fountain of Jeddah. Its spray reaches heights of over 300 meters, more than a third higher than the 2nd highest fountain in the world in St. Louis, Missouri. 

It is generally best viewed at the end of the day before sunset and is a spectacular sight that can be seen from many vantage points close to the Red Sea coastline during the evening because it is lit up.  It is a similar design to the fountain in St. Louis and another one in Geneva, Switzerland.

The base of the fountain is in the form of a large incense burner from which the forceful spray emanates.  It is only viewable from across the waters and is located on a peninsula which also houses a palace.

Jeddah's King Fountain at Night

King Fahd's Fountain, known more commonly as the King's Fountain, is one of the tallest spray fountains in the world.  Information differs as to its actual height, ranging from 260 meters to 312 meters.  It is located off Jeddah's coast and can only be viewed from a distance.  The spray is usually turned on at the end of the day and is visible from quite a distance as it is lit up against the night sky.  

Jeddah Waterfront Horse Fountain

Jeddah's Corniche has been transformed into a peaceful area where families can relax, stroll, and enjoy themselves in the beautiful surroundings.  This fountain features two stylized horses by Rabia Al Akhras, a Syrian sculptor.  Akhras has spent most of his life in Jeddah and presented these horse sculptures as a gift to the City of Jeddah.

Jeddah Waterfront Fountain

Jeddah's new waterfront accentuates its relationship with the Red Sea through its many water features.  This is one of the new fountains along the sea's coastline.  

Jeddah: Mosaic Tile Fountain

This beautiful mosaic tile fountain is located in an interior courtyard of the Tayebat Museum in Jeddah. 

Jeddah Fountain View from Middle Corniche

This is the view from the new Open Air Sculpture Park at Jeddah's Middle Corniche.  On the far left is the beautiful Al-Anani Mosque and on the far right is the famous King Fahd's Fountain, or known just simply as the Jeddah Fountain.  This fountain has been a fixture along Jeddah's Red Sea coastline for 30 years, using the seawater for its enormous spray.  It is located adjacent to Salam Palace.  The Jeddah Fountain is the tallest saltwater spray fountain in the world. The fountain's workings are all housed underwater and the seawater must be partially purified of most of the salt in order to keep it in good working condition.  For more interesting facts about the Jeddah Fountain, click here. 

Our World: Sunflower Field Fountain at Night

I've never been fortunate enough to see this lovely fountain that sprays water when it is working.  The Sunflower Field fountain is one of the few sculptures of Jeddah that was created by a female artist, Eila Hiltunen from Finland.  The piece of art consists of seven graceful sunflowers made of a special type of stainless steel that is extra strong to resist the effects of corrosion and the harsh elements of the weather and sea air of Jeddah.
