Jeddah: Antique Home Decor

Candelabras, a tree of incense burners, and fancy rosewater sprinklers (called "marrash" in Arabic) adorn the top shelf of this antique chest in a museum in Jeddah's historic district called Al Balad.  Each of these home accessories served important purposes in the early days in Saudi Arabia. Each is still a popular item still found in most homes today.

To learn more about the rosewater industry and its history in Saudi Arabia, Saudi Aramco World Magazine published a fascinating article 20 years ago about this subject.  CLICK HERE to read it.

Our World: Antique Baby Bottles

Have you ever seen baby bottles like these?  I never had until I saw them at the Museum Bai Jeddah, located down in Jeddah's old historic district called Al Balad.  With nipples on both ends, I was miffed and intrigued.

These antique baby bottles were named after the word for "boat" in Arabic because of their shape.  Either nipple could be used for drinking, but the extra nipple allowed for refilling the bottle without interrupting the baby and could also release air trapped inside the bottle.

Skywatch: Museum of Heritage and Civilization

Even though the big sign above the gate says it's the "Museum of Abdul Raouf Hasan Khalil Heritage and Civilization," I haven't been able to locate any information at all about this interesting building.

There is another building located in a different part of the city built by the same man (who, by the way, was my husband's uncle!) that houses the Tayebat Museum.

I do know that he had built a museum that burned down years ago.  Unfortunately I don't know what this building is used for or any details.  If anyone has any information, please feel free to comment.

Jeddah: Details on Museum Facade

The woodworking is amazing on Jeddah's Tayebat Museum.  I don't know how old the museum itself is, but the woodwork is regularly maintained to protect it from the effects of Jeddah's harsh climate.

Intricate carved wood details adorn the beautiful Tayebat Museum.  The window coverings are called rawasheen and are part of Jeddah's architectural heritage.

Replica of Old Jeddah

This is a small part of a very large miniature replica of Old Jeddah at the Tayebat Museum.  The entire replica takes up the length of about half a block and features many mosques and traditional home designs.

Jeddah: Miniature Village at Tayebat Museum

Outside the Tayebat Museum is a miniature village designed to look like Old Jeddah. The entire miniature village is probably at least ten times larger than what is shown here.

More Detail of Tayebat Museum

I love this architectural style of the Tayebat Museum in Jeddah.  I always wanted a home with a big open courtyard in the center.

Jeddah: Inside Tayebat Museum

This is an interior courtyard shot of the Tayebat Museum.  There are many open courtyard areas here.  The brown wooden window coverings are unique to Saudi Arabia and area called rawasheen.  The arched doorway and the pointed detailing above are also very typical in Saudi Arabian architecture.

Al Tayebat Museum

Al Tayebat Museum is an architectural gem in the middle of the city of Jeddah.  It is located near the famous Bicycle roundabout.  Painted bright white with traditional dark brown wood trim all over, this structure was built by a relative in my husband's family.  Groups of 10 or more can make reservations to tour the facility by calling 012 963 0049.

Jeddah: Beautiful Door Binzagr Gallery

Carved of wood with intricate detailing, this is another beautiful doorway of the Darat Safeya Binzagr Museum and Art Gallery of Jeddah. The building itself which houses the museum is a wonderful example of Middle Eastern architectural details.  On display at the museum are the Saudi female artist's paintings and her amazing collection of traditional clothing and accessories.

This gem of a private museum is tucked away in Jeddah off the beaten path, near Tahiliya and Madinah Roads.  For more information, visit their website by CLICKING HERE.
