TRANSFORMING JEDDAH

The slum areas all over the city of Jeddah, including old apartment buildings, businesses, and crowded maze-like residential areas, are being torn down and will be rebuilt. It has displaced thousands of residents, mainly foreign workers. There are sectors of the city that are now rubble, resembling a war zone.

Modern Buildings in Jeddah

An unfinished building in downtown Jeddah and a curvy blue glass building with a tribute to the king.

Jeddah's New Airport Terminal

Jeddah airport's newest terminal has been open now for over a year.  It's a very modern design. First photo is looking up at the ceiling along the walk from the ticket counter to the gate area.

This is the outside of part of the terminal. You can't see much of it, but the main part of the structure has a wavy copper roof, barely visible in this photo.

This shot was taken going doing the escalator to the gate area.  I love the ceiling design and the modern blue lighting.  Below is another outside shot of the wavy rooftop.

Jeddah Skyscraper from Different Angles

The photos in this post are actually just part of a huge complex called the Headquarters Business Park.  I have posted several photos of just the West Tower of the complex taken from different vantage points.  This section of the complex is 52 floors that extend  upward in almost a triangular shape.  There is also a parking section and then another smaller building, the East Tower, of only 15 floors which mimcs the shape of the building in today's post.

It houses hundreds of corporate offices and also residential villas, all of which have spectacular views of the Red Sea coastline.  The complex also includes restaurants and shopping, clinics, a hotel, and a helipad at the very top.  It is located near the brand new Waterfront Park.

It is currently the tallest building in Jeddah, but only the 10th tallest building in Saudi Arabia.  The West Tower soars 240 meters into the sky overlooking the Red Sea on the Corniche Road, next to the Hilton Hotel.  Construction of this complex began in 2008 and was completed in 2012.

Jeddah Construction Workers

Much of Saudi Arabia's hard labor force has for decades been imported from poorer foreign countries. With Saudization of the work force, I am not sure how this will affect this segment of the population.  Saudization aims to replace foreign workers with Saudi nationals in an effort to reduce the amount of unemployment.  I heard that a million foreign workers left Saudi Arabia for good during this past year, which is evidenced by the large number of vacant apartments and slashed prices in rental properties.

Jeddah's New Waterfront Project

A large section of the Jeddah Corniche has recently been renovated and opened the end of November.  This is a shot of the end of the beautiful new pier.  It's quite an impressive project.  I haven't seen all of it yet, but you can see more photos on a post I made on my other blog, Susie of Arabia.

SkyWatch: Jeddah Mosque on the Red Sea

One of Jeddah's hundreds of mosques sits right along the edge of the Red Sea. There is construction development happening between it and the Jeddah Hilton.  The land along the sea is of course premium real estate, so I'm sure the development will be something very fancy and expensive.

Jeddah Palace Under Construction

I believe this might be a palace judging by its sheer size.  It's been under construction for quite a while already.

Our World: Construction Zone

It looks messy, and I'm not really sure what this guy is doing sitting in the middle of it all.  It's not the most clear picture (it's hard to get a great focus when zooming past in a vehicle), but I rather liked the composition  of this photo and thought the man sitting there made it more interesting.

Skywatch: Construction During and After

I've been interested in this building since construction began on it more than a year ago.  I'm always curious to see what types of materials will be used in the product.  Many apartment buildings like this designate the lower first or second floors for businesses.

Below is the finished building.  I rather like the blue windows against the terra cotta colored tiles. And the white accents around the windows really set them off nicely too.  What do you think?
