The men pictured above are a good example of the freedom men in Saudi Arabia have as far as choosing what they wish to wear in public. Men can even wear shorts and T-shirts, and when swimming in public, they can wear swimsuits without shirts, no matter how buff and sexy or how overweight, hairy, and grotesque they may be.
This photo shows how women and girls are required to dress when in public in Saudi Arabia. I've seen women dressed like this swimming in the Red Sea also.

Seems that swimming with all those clothes on would certainly weigh one down. Hope you're not having to do that when snorkeling.
The Saudi clothing rules would be are absurd. Essentially if a woman can be seen as atractive by some male her clothing is regarded as immodest by the religious police. Yet modesty applies to men too, but men are judged by men not women. If Saudi rules were fair both sexes would have to wear black bags.
Of course as a foreigner I regard all there stories (there is one about a women be accosted for wearing nail polish) as a source of innocent merriment. No matter how badly I feel about my own country I can almost always see that the Saudis make us look just a little bit less stupid.
When I go snorkeling, I have to worry about getting sunburned. So I have been wearing a long sleeved white t-shirt and a pair of long white stirrup pants. I've actually been quite comfortable in it and haven't gotten sunburned! I cannot imagine going into the water in an abaya - too much loose fabric to have to deal with.
The problem here in KSA is that things have been carried to the extreme and seem to be going backward many times instead of moving forward. Much of this is seen as being backward by the rest of the world. On the other hand, acceptable dress in the west has also gone overboard to the extreme in the other direction, with modesty having gone out the window, especially with the way some women dress. It would be nice if there were a happy medium everywhere.
Too true, 'acceptable dress' unfortunately lost in the west. I agree, a happy medium would be nice.
well, there's nothing wrong with a traditional style, as long as it's not taken to extremes. and I very much agree with your comment, saying that balance is what we lack and therefore we so desperately need. we = the entire world.
I can never understand why one set of people in one country should enjoy such freedom of dress while another has to conform to quite different principles.
I too have to cover up while swimming as the sun would eat me up but certainly not because of any rules or regulations.
