SCENES FROM KAEC

King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) is a planned multibillion dollar city complex intended to promote economic growth, industrial endeavors, and investment opportunities. Conceived by King Abdullah in 2005, one of the purposes of KAEC was to relieve urban congestion in the country's large overcrowded cities.

Located on the Red Sea coastline about 100 km north of Jeddah, future plans for KAEC include hopes of providing one million jobs.  Its seaport was ranked second in the world of fastest growing seaports, with capabilities of handling the world's largest ships.

Jeddah Waterfront Beach

Jeddah's new waterfront features three swimming areas that many residents are now enjoying.  Women are not allowed to wear bathing suits in public places, so while we see some men wearing only swim trunks in the water and on the beaches, women must still be totally covered.  But that doesn't prevent some women from getting in the water, as you can see.

Jeddah Beach Resort

The city of Jeddah runs north and south along the Red Sea, taking full advantage of being right on the coastline. North of Jeddah, there are many beach resorts - some catering to everyone and others catering to only expats, where women's dress codes are much looser.

This beach resort called Durrat al Aroos has a large marina which houses hundreds of sailing vessels.

Jeddah Beach Skyline

The variety of architectural shapes makes this beach skyline rather unusual.  It can be seen north of Jeddah in an area called Obhur.

Modern architectural styles in Saudi Arabia often feature curves, cut outs, and blue glass. These two residential buildings along Jeddah's Corniche offer gorgeous views of the Red Sea.

SkyWatch: Beach Pool

This is the pretty scene out at one of Jeddah's beach resorts north of the city that caters to Jeddah's working expats.  You can see the Red Sea beyond the umbrellas in the center of the photo.

Jeddah: Mosaic Beach Path

Here is another walkway that leads to a beautiful beach in northern Jeddah.  I love the mosaic tile and the variety of colors.

Bleached Beach House

I rather like how the sun has bleached and streaked the aqua paint on this beach house north of Jeddah.

Durrat Al Aroos

This is a section of the Durrat Al Aroos Resort Village, north of Jeddah.  With its own harbor, this area offers many options for a nice weekend get away. The elaborate wooden window coverings are fashioned after the distinctive roshan of Old Jeddah.

Beach Condos

Jeddah stretches for miles and miles along the Red Sea coastline.  The popular beach areas are mostly north of Jeddah and are becoming more and more developed every year.  This area is called Durrat al Aroos and it is located about a 40 minute drive north of Jeddah.  The area has individually owned condos and villas as well as rentals of all kinds.
