SCULPTURES - NOW & THEN
THE HARSH CLIMATE OF JEDDAH REQUIRES SUITABLE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS FOR ITS MANY SCULPTURES. CONSTANT MAINTENANCE IS CALLED FOR - NECESSITATING REPAIRS, REFURBISHING OR REPAINTING. WITH CHANGES TO ROADWAYS AROUND THE CITY, SOME SCULPTURES HAVE BEEN RELOCATED. OTHERS HAVE JUST DISAPPEARED.
THIS COLORFUL BOAT SCULPTURE IS LOCATED IN THE OBHUR DISTRICT OF JEDDAH. ABOVE IS HOW IT APPEARS TODAY. I POSTED THE BELOW PHOTO OF THE SAME SCULPTURE BACK IN 2009 WHEN IT HAD A RED, WHITE AND BLUE COLOR PALETTE.
THIS SCULPTURE IS CALLED THE SHAHADAT AL TAWHID. THE CORNICHE AREA ALONG THE RED SEA WHERE IT IS LOCATED WAS COMPLETELY REDONE SEVERAL YEARS AGO. ABOVE IS HOW IT APPEARS TODAY. THE TWO PHOTOS BELOW WERE TAKEN BY ME IN 2010 FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES.
THE SHAHADA IS A PHRASE IN ARABIC RECITED BY EVERY MUSLIM PROFESSING THEIR MONOTHEISTIC BELIEF THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD. THIS SCULPTURE WAS MADE BY SPANISH ARTIST JULIO LAFUENTE, WHO DID NOT READ OR SPEAK ARABIC HIMSELF.

Morning at Durrat Al Aroos
A peaceful early morning shot at the marina at Durrat al Aroos, north of Jeddah. As we sat in the boat preparing to go out to sea, I kept hearing splashing in the water near me. I looked over and saw large areas of the otherwise calm water fluttering. It turns out that it was hundreds of little sardines that were trying to escape the jaws of larger fish below them hunting for their breakfast. Above the water, dozens of seagulls waited for the sardines splashing on the water's surface. They dove down and successfully caught their snacks. It was quite fascinating.

Our World: Driving in Saudi Arabia
Since I am a woman, I cannot drive a car in Saudi Arabia. But there was no one stopping me from driving this boat on the Red Sea! In the background is the beach resort area north of Jeddah called Durrat al Aroos, which translates roughly to the best of the bride. The seaport of Jeddah is known as the bride of the Red Sea.

Our World: Harbor at Oh Dark Thirty
When I go out on the Red Sea with my husband, he likes to go in the middle of the night before the intense heat of the day approaches. This harbor is at a place called Durrat Al Aroos, a popular resort area north of Jeddah. I love the blackness, the stillness of the water, and beautiful reflections of the boats.

SkyWatch: Red Sea Dolphins
On my very first snorkeling expedition in the Red Sea, I took it as a good sign that dolphins danced alongside of our boats as we drove out to the dive spots. There were several dozen dolphins who put on a little show for us. You can read more about my first snorkeling experience here by reading my post about it called "Finding Nemo: Snorkeling in the Red Sea" on my other blog, Susie's Big Adventure.
