A SMILE THAT WILL BE MISSED

MY NEPHEW CORY ON HIS WEDDING DAY

This past week I lost my nephew Cory to Covid-19.  He was a healthy, happy 39 year old before he contracted the deadly virus in late December.  Cory was born to perform and always loved making people laugh. He was so full of life and he was larger than life.

Cory was always the center of attention - people were just drawn to him. He was intelligent, kind, talented, and hilarious. Cory entertained thousands over the years at Old Tucson as an actor, stuntman, and script writer.  Audience members always sought him out after the show to get a photo with him.  There was a special magic and charisma about him.

His death didn't have to happen. Cory lived with his wife and his mom, who was infected with Covid by a stupid asymptomatic co-worker who refused to wear a mask.  Cory's mom unknowingly brought the virus home.  All three of them became sick.  The women didn't require hospitalization and recovered.  However Cory, who kept testing negative for the virus, continued to get sicker and sicker.  He was near death when he was rushed to the hospital on January 10th.  He was immediately put on a ventilator in the ICU.  A little over two weeks later, he was dead.

Our family is shattered, heartbroken, devastated, crushed.  We've lost our smiling happy boy Cory.

School Uniforms

Pink girls' uniforms hang from the ceiling on display for shoppers.  Most public and private schools here in Saudi Arabia require children to wear uniforms.

Girls' Formal Dress Shop

The store windows of this little girls' dress shop caught my eye.  I liked the colors and the fanciful Asian theme.  These dresses might be worn for holidays or weddings or other more formal events.

There is no shortage of shops like these here in Jeddah and the competition is steep.  There are always more formal events to attend and little girls here generally have quite an array of formal attire.

Jeddah City People

City Daily Photo is an online community of photo bloggers that share images of life in their cities around the world.  The first of every month is Theme Day  for City Daily Photo bloggers.  This month's theme is "City People."  I chose this photo from January 2016 which I took during the Jeddah Historic Festival that took place in the oldest part of the city called Al Balad.  It features a local Saudi woman who painted children's faces for the festival, much like festivals I have been to in other places around the world. I feel it shows that we are all human and that people here in Saudi Arabia are similar to people everywhere.

Be sure  to visit the City Daily Photo portal to view other participants' entries for today's theme day.

Redhead in the Mall

Taken one day in the mall a few months ago, this photo shows a couple of Saudi women walking by with a red headed little girl. The women are wearing the type of ultra conservative all black abaya that is one piece from the head to the toes and totally hides the female form - even the shoulders are not visible. Most women choose abayas that are more like a dress or coat with a separate scarf to cover the hair.

CDP Theme Day - Jeddah Pre-School

Before this whole coronavirus pandemic affected the whole world, I was fortunate to attend the International Day event at Bear Hugs Preschool here in Jeddah.  Bear Hugs has been in operation in the Al Hamra District of Jeddah since 2003 and has a very diverse international staff as well as students.

The staff and students obviously put a lot of effort and thought into making this event the roaring success that it was.  Each class had adopted a country to learn about, and the students dressed up in costumes representing each country.

In the school's lovely outdoor courtyard area, each class had prepared a space showing facts, traditions, and clothing from each country represented.

The adorable students were rightfully proud of what they had learned.  Dozens of moms attended the standing room only event.  The festivities were kicked off with a parade of the preschoolers (ages 2-6) wearing their costumes and waving flags as they made their way through the packed courtyard.

The parade was followed by a show with the students singing and performing for the beaming moms in the audience.  I was very impressed with the upbeat and happy school, its administrators, teachers, and students.  It was a lovely morning and I'm very happy to have been invited to see the school and attend this fun colorful celebration.
