Saudi Arabia Patriotism

Saudis are very proud of their country. It is common for them to show it by displaying their patriotism on their vehicles and businesses.

Jeddah Anti-Littering Graphic

Going through my old photos, since we haven't been out much with this Corona isolation - An anti-littering graphic adorning the side of a delivery truck in Jeddah that I photographed a few years ago.

Jeddah Abandoned Car Ongoing Problem

While this problem has improved somewhat over the years, the streets of Jeddah are still impacted with disabled and abandoned vehicles that take up valuable parking spaces in neighborhoods all over the city. Plus they are such an eyesore.

Jeddah Sidewalk Parking

Sidewalks are supposed to be for pedestrians, but this sidewalk in Jeddah is being used to store vehicles long term.  Parking is a big problem in many areas of the city, but seeing this strikes me as ridiculous, in my opinion - especially if the sidewalk belongs to the city.  I just don't understand people doing things like this...

Jeddah Car Decal in Arabic

Typically many vehicles here in Saudi Arabia sport Arabic script like this that are either verses from the Quran or are religious in nature.  This one says "Mashallah tabarak allah" which is very difficult to translate - but something like whatever Allah wants, he will put blessings into it.  If anyone else has a good translation of this term, please speak up.

SkyWatch - Hanging out

Once women can drive here in Saudi Arabia in June 2018, I'm hoping that child safety might improve through the use of infant car seats and seat belts.  My thought is that if a young mother is driving her small children around, she will realize that the kids need to be safely buckled in.  As it is now, babies often sit on Mom's lap.  Actually I've even seen babies sitting on Dad's lap while he drives too...  Saudi women who have never driven before will be required to take driving classes and my hope is that child safety is one of the topics that will be incorporated into the classes.

Our World: Jeddah Kid in Sun Roof

One thing that really irks me is when I see children riding in cars in Jeddah who are not safely buckled in to car seats or even seat belts.  It is a common sight to see small children standing up sticking out the sun roofs of cars, hanging out the windows, or sitting on Dad's lap as he drives.  Certainly in this day and age, parents here should be aware how dangerous these things are. I've also complained about seeing really young boys actually driving in Saudi Arabia too, while women were forbidden to drive (this is to change in June 2018).  All of the links I have cited in this text are from previous posts with photographic proof that I have made highlighting these serious societal and safety problems over the past several years. This continues to be a huge problem in Saudi Arabia with sadly no end in sight.

OurWorld: In the Driver's Seat

While women won't be officially allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia until June of this year, men and underage boys continue to get away with unsafe and illegal driving habits.  In Saudi Arabia it is not unusual to see toddlers sitting on Dad's lap while he's driving, or boys too young to get a driver's license behind the wheel.  Does Dad realize that any small impact will release the safety airbag and his child will likely be killed by that? I do hope that once women actually do start driving here that these shocking and foolish habits will disappear.

Abandoned Cars in the Desert

A common sight off the roadsides in the desert is the abandoned car, that has either been involved in an accident or has broken down.

Many of them are rusted out so badly that they are literally crumbling.

Jeddah: Abandoned Taxi

There continues to be a huge problem with the streets of Jeddah being occupied with abandoned vehicles that are wrecked or disabled.  Every time it rains in the city of Jeddah, there is severe flooding of the streets and tunnels, which causes another increase in the number of automobiles abandoned in the streets.  This has been a noticeable problem for as long as I have live in Jeddah since 2007. The municipality has attempted to alleviate the problem, without success, because the next time it rains, the problem multiplies yet again.

Our World: Bentley

In the higher end parking lots of shopping areas of Jeddah, it's not unusual to see Bentleys, like this one, or even Rolls Royces.   License plates here are written in both English and Arabic.

Saudi Emblem Car Decal

The symbol of the palm tree above two crossed swords became the national emblem of Saudi Arabia in 1950.

The date palm tree is a dynamic resource of the country. The edible date portion supplies a valuable source of nutrition. The rest of the tree provides value as well in the making of functional objects like, baskets and rope.

The crossed swords on the emblem represent the unification of the Hejaz and Najd areas by Ibn Saud, which along with the tribes of the eastern and southern regions, all came together in 1932 to become the country of Saudi Arabia.

Jeddah: Artwork on Water Truck

The water trucks (and poop trucks) that crowd and jam the streets of Jeddah are painted with bright colors and a variety of themes, like flowers or patriotism.

Our World: Jeddah Traffic

There are many weird things that I see happening in traffic in Jeddah all the time that I haven't seen in other countries that I have been to.  This photo shows a driving phenomenon in Saudi Arabia that always miffs me.  The car in the center is actually waiting at a red light in front of several lanes of traffic that you can see behind him.  I have seen other cars do this practically every day. I've even seen cars drive onto the sidewalk in order to gain this position at a red light.  Enforcement of traffic laws in the kingdom seems to be non-existent.  The lack of traffic enforcement in Saudi Arabia is being used as one of the many eye-rolling reasons given why women shouldn't be allowed to drive in this country.

Our World: Saudi License Plates

Vehicle license plates in Saudi Arabia always have the license numbers written in both Arabic and English.  Many vehicles also sport religious verses displayed on the back windows.

SklyWatch: Sun Roof

I apologize for the poor quality of this photo, but it's really difficult to get a good shot of something like this here in Saudi Arabia.  General safety concerns really haven't impacted Saudi Arabia as they have in many other countries yet.  Most Saudi children are not buckled into seatbelts and smaller kids are not placed in car seats.  Many younger kids sit on dad's lap as he drives, or on mom's lap in the passenger seat.  And it is common to see children riding in cars standing up and sticking out of the sun roof or hanging out the windows.  If an accident occurs and the child is injured or killed, it is considered to be God's will, not parental carelessness.
