Our World: Near Beer in Saudi

I think it's interesting that among the popular beverages in Saudi Arabia are non-alcoholic versions of beer. Many of them actually come in a variety of different flavors, like apple, berry, and peach.

I have never understood the point of near beer.

I think I might quite fancy a non-alcoholic beer.

Hi Susie! Looks like I'm lucky 13!
I never acquired a taste for beer so this would not appeal to me but my father drank near beer because the real thing gave him a headache. I don't think he would have liked the flavors though.

That's the kind of thing prohibition generates.
Maybe we can say it's funny - or is it?

Actually I tried one of those near beers and it was nasty. It just has extra malt and sugar. O'Doul's in the U.S. is truly beer minus the alcohol and it is very good.

Awful stuff - I tried it. Extra malt and sugar - terrible. O'Doul's in the States is real beer - minus the alcohol and it tastes great...
