SkyWatch - Jeddah Faded Graffiti

The graffiti on the side of this building was originally painted in February of 2014 for Jeddah Art Week.  This "calligraffiti" (the term coined for the combination of Arabic calligrahy and graffiti) is the creation of artist eL Seed, whose name is a take on "El Cid," meaning the lord or master.

The below photo was taken in 2014, when the calligraffiti was freshly done. As you can see, the harsh elements of Jeddah's climate have severely faded the red and pink paint.

Our World - Arabic Script Jewelry

I've always been attracted to Arabic script since we moved here - in business signs, toilet signs, and jewelry, and wherever else there is Arabic writing.  The above pendant says "Mother" in the larger script.  There is smaller Arabic script at the very top that says "I love my..."

This pendant is just of the letter "Ya."

This last pendant spells out the woman's name of "Shahad."

A bit of Magic and Artful Letters

I rather fancy this magic lamp!  I believe it's made of pewter.  Next to it is a gold pendant which represents the Arabic letter "noon" which is the sound of the letter N.

This one represents the "ya" letter in Arabic. It looks very graceful, don't you think?

This one says "Ummi" which means "Mom" in Arabic.

Jeddah: Jewelry with Arabic Calligraphy Letters

A nice souvenir from the Middle East is a piece of jewelry with your name spelled out in Arabic script or even just the first letter of your name.  A shop called "Extraordinaire" (or "Extraordinary" - I'm not sure!) in the Serafi Mega Mall has a nice selection of Arabic lettered jewelry.

Extraordinaire has bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces with Arabic script on them.  I believe they also do special orders.

I think this medallion is just beautiful with the Arabic calligraphy on it.  I cannot read or write Arabic, so to me it looks like beautiful art.

This one is the letter "ayn." My good friend Vicki got me one for my birthday with the first letter of my name on it.  Thank you, Vicki!

Saudi Arabia Bowls with Arabic Script

I saw this set of bowls in a restaurant on display and I thought they were really cool.

Jeddah Car Decal in Arabic

Typically many vehicles here in Saudi Arabia sport Arabic script like this that are either verses from the Quran or are religious in nature.  This one says "Mashallah tabarak allah" which is very difficult to translate - but something like whatever Allah wants, he will put blessings into it.  If anyone else has a good translation of this term, please speak up.

Saudi Arabia - Art in Abha

The city of Abha is rich in cultural heritage and is located in the southwestern corner of Saudi Arabia.  Even though it is located close to the Red Sea, its elevation is more than a mile high in a mountainous region of the country.  The city is abundant with art everywhere one turns.

To learn more about Abha and to see more photos of its architecture and art, PLEASE CLICK HERE to read a recent post I wrote about it on my other blog, Susie of Arabia.

Thanks to my friend Vicki Callagan for the use of her photos from her recent trip to Abha for this post.

Jeddah: Kalimah Brand

I always look for Saudi gifts with Arabic calligraphic script on them, like this scarf from Kalimah Brand.

Arabic Business Sign Calligraphy

I like this style of Arabic calligraphy font that announces this business.  It's clean and crisp.

Arabic Calligraphy

Over the next few days, I will feature different styles of Arabic calligraphy.  Arabic script is so beautiful - like an art unto itself.  I hope you will enjoy the various fonts I will post in the coming days.  Arabic is written right to left, the opposite of English.
In this photo, you can clearly see two different calligraphy styles, one in orange on the sign above the business, and the other at the top of the building. The orange script is very graceful and curvy, while the font at the top is more regimented and angular.

Jeddah: Arabic Writing on Mosque

This is a mosque that stands in Jeddah's old section called Al Balad.  The mosque has detailing in the form of Arabic calligraphy (verses from the Quran) adorning its outer walls.  I think it makes for an attractive border, don't you?

SkyWatch: Arabic Script Sculpture

Jeddah is a city of art.  There are hundreds of public sculptures dotting the landscape of the city.  This one spells "Allah" in Arabic calligraphy.
