Modern and Colorful Jeddah

Jeddah is an eclectic mix of old and new, drab and colorful. This post shows the brighter side of modern Jeddah, where there are many entertainment centers and amusement parks catering to families.  Most shopping malls here have an area designated for family entertainment, so mothers can go and do their shopping while their kids are looked after by maids or nannies in the amusement area.  The colorful green and yellow building below is actually part of a larger international school complex which accommodates grades K through 10.  Happy St. Patty's Day!

Jeddah's New Airport Terminal

Jeddah airport's newest terminal has been open now for over a year.  It's a very modern design. First photo is looking up at the ceiling along the walk from the ticket counter to the gate area.

This is the outside of part of the terminal. You can't see much of it, but the main part of the structure has a wavy copper roof, barely visible in this photo.

This shot was taken going doing the escalator to the gate area.  I love the ceiling design and the modern blue lighting.  Below is another outside shot of the wavy rooftop.

Modern Buildings of Jeddah

The city of Jeddah is rich in architecture, both old and new.  This post shares some of the newer architectural styles around the city - as you can see, blue glass is a favorite here.  The modern architecture of Jeddah features unusual shapes, curves and geometrics. Enjoy!

Jeddah Women Shopping in Al Balad

While many expat women living in Jeddah have shed the once obligatory abaya in favor of normal modest clothing, many Saudi women still wear the traditional flowy black abaya when out in public.

There are some younger modern Saudi women who have broken with tradition and no longer even cover their hair, but for the most part, many still conform to the cultural norms.

I'm seeing fewer women wearing the facial veil, called niqab, but there are plenty who still don that too.  The last photo features a woman wearing the ultra conservative head to toe abaya, called jilbaab, which totally obscures the female form altogether, where even her shoulders are difficult to make out.

SkyWatch - Gate Replica in Jeddah

In the olden days, Jeddah was a small fishing village built along the Red Sea.  There were three different roads leading to the city, from the north, south, and east - and the Red Sea borders Jeddah to the west.  Jeddah was surrounded and protected by a large wall which encompassed the whole city, except where the sea was.  The three roads to Jeddah had large gates through which people entered or departed the city.

Shortly after oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia in 1938, Jeddah began to grow much more rapidly and eventually its walls had to be torn down because of Jeddah's expansion.  Now modern Jeddah has several replicated gates around the city as reminders of the past.

Pretty Newer Building in Old Jeddah

One of the latest design styles for new buildings here in Jeddah is a pretty golden colored sandstone.  This newer building is located in the oldest section of Jeddah, called Al Balad.

I love the wooden lattice work around the windows, resembling the pretty roshan window coverings that Jeddah is known for.

I love how the color changes drastically when it's lit up by the waning sun of the late afternoon.  The blue glass windows also provide another interesting dimension to the overall look of the building.
