WEEKEND ROUNDUP - LETTER "Z"

STARTS WITH "Z" - ZAKAT IS ONE OF THE FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM. IT IS AN ISLAMIC OBLIGATION TO BE CHARITABLE TO THOSE WHO ARE LESS FORTUNATE.

"ZIPPY" - NO ABAYA AND WEARING ZEBRA.
I'D SAY THAT'S PRETTY "ZIPPY" FOR SAUDI ARABIA!

A FAVORITE - "ZAATAR" - A TASTY MIDDLE EASTERN MIXTURE OF VARIOUS HERBS AND SPICES, LIKE OREGANO, THYME, SUMAC, SAVORY & SESAME SEEDS, USED IN BREAD DISHES.

ANOTHER FAVORITE "Z" PIC - COLORFUL ZINNIAS

Jeddah Spice Market - Sumac

The spice sumac derives from red berries of the sumac bush which grows in the Middle East. The berries are dried and then crushed into a coarse powder.  With its pleasant lemony taste, sumac is used to spice up many dishes in the region, oftentimes sprinkled on top to enhance not only the flavor, but to jazz up the appearance of the dishes.

Colorful Bulk Spices

I love the colors and textures of the spices available here in Jeddah.  The prices shown are in riyals (approximately 4 riyals = $1 US) and per kilo (2.2 pounds).

Spice Up Your Life

Spices, nuts, seeds, and beans are often sold in bulk or in separate shops or dedicated areas of larger stores.  An employee will package up your order.  These grocery items are much cheaper here in Saudi Arabia than in the states.

Herb & Spice Shop

Many smaller shops in Jeddah are stocked to capacity with product.  This shop sells dates, herbs, honey, spices and many other items.
