UNDER THE HOT SUN

Once the warmer months hit, I get a little leery of the fresh produce that is exposed to the hot sun for hours on end each day.

Their prices are still cheaper than the clean air conditioned modern supermarkets though.

AL SOUDAH MOUNTAIN

The southwestern region of Abha in Saudi Arabia is the location of the country's tallest mountain range, with Al Soudah Mountain measuring at over 3000 meters high (almost 10,000 feet).  Average temperatures are much cooler here than the lower elevations of the rest of the country.

It is a popular tourist destination for Saudis due to its spectacular scenery, a cable car attraction, and the weather.  The mountains are covered with juniper trees, dreamy mist, and in the colder months - snow.

Jeddah - Working in the Heat

A fresh watermelon street vendor finds a little respite from the hot sun by finding a bit of shade while waiting for customers.  A cement worker stands out in the heat in a place with no shade.  I don't know how they do it. By the time I take the elevator down from our apartment and walk to our nearby car, I am already dripping with sweat.

The Fierce Red Sea

This photo was taken a few months ago back in February when the winds were strong, causing the Red Sea waves to splash up onto the walkway along the coast.  I love the droplets and the brilliant blue of the water.

SkyWatch - Jeddah Rainy Season

It doesn't rain often here in Jeddah, but when it rains, it pours.  The winter months are when the rainy season is, although the first few years I lived here, it didn't rain at all - ever! Jeddah is not equipped to handle rain - there is no drainage system in place, so the water just sits, sometimes for days.  In past years, people have died when it rained.  Tunnels fill with water and people drive into them in their cars and drown.  Others step into the standing water and get electrocuted by fallen wires.

OurWorld - It's November ...And I'm still Hot

Even though it's late November already, the temperatures are still in the 90s here in Jeddah - and I'm still hot.  We still have our AC on all day and night.

It makes me hotter just seeing cold weather clothing, like jackets and sweaters, in all the mall windows.  This guy on the escalator was even wearing one of those goofy fur lined hats, which I certainly don't understand in 90 degree weather.

SkyWatch - Jeddah Red Sea Coast

From one day to the next, the weather conditions can vary greatly in Jeddah. This time of year, it's usually already quite warm and humid.  This year, however, the weather has been unusually pleasant for a much longer period than normal.  We were even very comfortable sitting outdoors at a seaside restaurant.

Our World: Leisure Life on the Red Sea

Usually by April in Jeddah, the sweltering oppressive heat has already taken hold, but this year the weather has been surprisingly pleasant.  I'm happy any time I am outside and not sweating!

It's nice seeing so many Jeddawis enjoying the pleasant weather too.  Personally I especially like seeing the young girls letting their hair blow in the breeze and doing things like bike riding or rollerblading that I used to pretty much only see boys doing here in public. Times have changed here in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia - Wash Me Please!

As you can imagine, dust is a never ending problem here in Saudi Arabia.  The lack of rain, dryness, and lack of vegetation all contribute to make dust a vicious cycle that needs constant attention.  It's really hard to keep up with it.

But on the other hand, on the rare occasion when it does rain here in Jeddah, the streets become rivers, flooding and crippling the city.  There is no drainage system, nowhere for the rainwater to go.
