SkyWatch: Haboob Sky

After a late lunch one day at a local restaurant, I was surprised when we exited the restaurant and the sky was hazy and eerie, the wind had really picked up, and it felt like something was definitely in the air.  It was the beginning of a haboob, a big dust storm that is common here in Saudi Arabia.

SkyWatch: Domed Mall

When the sun is setting, I like to go up on the rooftop of our building and enjoy the breeze, the lights beginning to turn on about the city, and the sunset, of course. With so much wind and dust the past few months, there haven't been many spectacular sunsets at all. This dome-shaped building is actually a large shopping mall in Jeddah styled after the Capitol Building in Washington DC.

SkyWatch: When Will This Dust End?

Since January 2012 I have lived on the 6th floor of an apartment building in Jeddah. I'm able to see out the windows or from the rooftop for miles and miles.

If I cannot see the mountains in the distance, I know that the wind and dust is very bad that day. Some days I can only see for a couple of blocks.

This year by far has had the worst winds and dust storms since I moved here four years ago.

It has lasted for months now. On really bad days, school has been canceled and emergency rooms have been flooded with people who have respiratory problems.

Besides my breathing difficulties, trying to keep the house free of fine layers of dust everywhere is also a big problem.

SkyWatch: Dusty Days

This year the wind and resulting dust storms have been the absolute worst and the windy season has lasted much longer than it has since I moved here in 2007. Hospitals have been filled with people suffering from asthma or other breathing problems. Thick layers of dust have covered everything in sight. There have been no cleansing rains to wash away the dust or settle it down. Many days the skies have been a brown haze with not a patch of blue visible anywhere. On the worst days, schools were closed and many people just stayed home because visibility on the streets was so poor. On really bad days, it is not unusual to see many people wearing surgical masks over their faces.
