Our World - Al Balad Night Scenes

At night Al Balad becomes a bustling business hub, especially on the weekends. It is loaded with curious sightseers, shoppers looking for deals, and friendly shopkeepers eager to make a sale.

It's a truly  wondrous place where time seems to stand still.

Our World: Colorful Jeddah at Night

Like many cities, Jeddah comes alive at night with bright neon lights and people out and about looking for things to do.  One of the reasons why Jeddah is more alive at night is because of the severe heat, especially in the warmer months. Jeddah's Waterfront along the Corniche is one of the most popular places to hang out in the evenings.

Pretty Jeddah at Night

This post features one of my favorite buildings to photograph in Jeddah, whch also happens to be the tallest bulding in the city at the current time.

I've taken many photos of this building and have written about it before several times too.  Here is a previous post with information about this graceful skyscraper near the Red Sea coastline.

CLICK HERE to see another post featuring this same building, but with a couple of spectacular shots of it taken at sunset.

Jeddah Nite Scene on the Corniche

Many small shops like this one that sell snacks and drinks, ice cream, prayer rugs, blow up toys, and lots of items one might want to purchase while strolling on the Corniche are located along the Red Sea coastline of Jeddah.  They all seem to do quite a thriving business.

Jeddah Beauty at Night

The seashell shaped building on the left is a restaurant which is part of the Movenpick Al Nawras Resort on its own private island right on the Red Sea.  "Al Nawras" translates in English to seagull. Each villa offers a spectacular seaview plus its own private pool.

Jeddah: Man and his Cat

I feel fortunate when I get permission to take portraits of people here in Saudi Arabia.  Many times I am turned down, but this gentleman was very gracious and was so proud of his cat purring in his lap.

Our World: Jeddah Night Scenes

Typical night scenes in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Not one woman in sight - actually I was the only one, out walking with my husband.

Saudi Arabia is definitely a man's world.

Jeddah Out of Focus Spaceship Building

I hope you are enjoying my "Out of Focus" series of photos this month.  I have photographed this shopping strip mall many times.  I love how the lights on this building make it appear like a spaceship to me.  Even though it's out of focus, you can still make out the English writing and the Arabic script identifying the shops.

Jeddah: Out of Focus Pulse of City

Jeddah comes alive at night with otherwise drab buildings outlined in brightly colored neon.   This is the last of this month's series called "Out of Focus."  I hope you have enjoyed it!

Jeddah: Out of Focus Nightlife

In my continuing series of "Out of Focus" photos, this one is not only out of focus but it's rather tilted as well.  But I like it!  It gives an accurate feeling of the hustle and bustle of the heavy traffic and nightlife of Jeddah.

Out of Focus Night Scene

I always try taking photos at night here, but so many of them wind up in the trash-bin because they are so out of focus, taken from a car zooming by.  Despite that, I actually like many of the blurry images and see them as artistic.  The lights oftentimes make graceful squiggly lines.  In this pic, I love the purple lights' reflection on the vehicle parked here and I also love how the lamp appears to be over-sized.  Don't know how I did that!

Jeddah: Green Neon Building

Many of Jeddah's buildings are outlined in a variety of colored neon lights.  It brings the city to life at night, don't you think?

Night Life

We don't go out that much at night, but when we do, I'm always amazed at the lively nightlife on the streets.  There are of course no nightclubs here as alcohol is illegal, so there is not much for young men to do but hang out in the streets.  This shot was taken outside a phone service shop.

Outdoor Dining - Bedouin Style

This is a very typical and traditional outdoor Bedouin style fish restaurant north of Jeddah.  There is no furniture to speak of, just carpets on the ground with cushions and portable arm rests.  This is the men's section of the restaurant.  It is divided from the family section of the restaurant with a big wall.  Notice that there are also televisions at some areas for watching sports or religious programming.

SkyWatch: Domed Mall

When the sun is setting, I like to go up on the rooftop of our building and enjoy the breeze, the lights beginning to turn on about the city, and the sunset, of course. With so much wind and dust the past few months, there haven't been many spectacular sunsets at all. This dome-shaped building is actually a large shopping mall in Jeddah styled after the Capitol Building in Washington DC.
