Yanbu Flowers Festival 2019 Scheduled

As usual, the dates for the 2019 annual Yanbu Flowers Festival are still murky at this point, but the event should be coming up soon.  The General Authority for Entertainment has put out the festival dates as running from Tuesday, March 14th through Saturday, April 8th, however other sites have differing information, starting as early as February 28 and ending March 30.  If I am able to confirm either way, I will let you know.

The festival is free for all attendees and there are many nice places to stay in Yanbu.  Event timings are 4-11pm daily.  If you love flowers, you won't want to miss this colorful spectacle.  You can see my posts for lots more photos from some of the recent years festivals at these links:  Yanbu FF 2018 and Yanbu FF 2016.

A big "Thanks" to my friend and amazing photographer Abdullah Yahya for allowing me to share this beautiful photo for today's post from last years Flower Festival.  Stay tuned for more fantastic pics from around Saudi Arabia taken by Abdullah.  Follow him on Instagram and Twitter @ayaa1977

Yanbu Flower Festival Going on NOW!

Last weekend was the opening of the 2018 Yanbu Flower Festival, the 12th annual event of its kind.  I have been fortunate to have visited it for the past three years.  If you are in Saudi Arabia and you haven't been yet, I highly recommend it.  Every year, it has just gotten bigger and better.  The event is extremely well organized, there is plenty of parking, and it's FREE!

This year's additions include additional water features, more great vendors, children's entertainment area, and regional artists painting live.

This event runs for about three weeks through March 25, open daily from 4pm-11pm.  Fridays and Saturdays will of course be more crowded.  The weather is still nice enough, so don't miss out!

Mall Entertainment Area

Pretty much all malls in Saudi Arabia have a family entertainment area, much like a carnival.  Malls are very popular places here on the weekends.

Misspelled: Franch Fries

I am always amazed at the products and business signs that I see around here that have misspellings on them.  Here we have misspelled French Fries on those little boxes that fast food french fries come in.   This item was offered for sale at a 5 riyal store here in Jeddah.

White Camel Table Base

I saw this ceramic table base in a gift shop here in Jeddah and I thought it was cute.  It is a white decorated camel and would make a nice end table if equipped with a piece of glass on top.  I'm not sure if the glass is included or not, but the price on the camel is 1195 SR, which is about $ 320 US.

Construction Tools Sculptures

Here are two more whimsical sculptures in the middle of a large traffic island in Jeddah.  These are giant work tools - a saw and a wrench.

SkyWatch: Busy Corniche on the Red Sea

Women clad in black.  Men and children wear what they want.  Red Sea breezes at the end of the day along Jeddah's Corniche.

Accessories Souq

Colorful scarves and jingling coins worn by belly dancers are available in this souq in Al Balad. There are no clubs where one can go to see belly dancers performing in this strict religious country, however I'm sure many men throughout the country may get their own private shows at home.

SkyWatch: Lilac Chevy Tahoe

I like showing things from Saudi Arabia that might not be expected. I think a bright lilac colored Chevy Tahoe with matching colored wheel rims qualifies. The only thing is, the woman who likely owns this vehicle is not allowed to drive it, as women are forbidden to drive here.

UPDATE JUNE 2018 - I'd love to see the woman who owns this vehicle driving it herself around Jeddah now, as women have finally been given the green light to drive in Saudi Arabia - the last country in the world to grant women the right to drive.

Our World: Paintball in Jeddah!

One might not expect to find a paintball business in Saudi Arabia, but in Jeddah, there are at least two locations! I've complained before that there is really not that much to do here, so I'm happy to discover that there are places like this here, especially for the youth and those who are young at heart. This one is located in Obhur, north of Jeddah, and the other location is near Prince Sultan Road and Al Kayal Street. I'm not sure about the cost and how it compares to the states.
For more information, you can call 055-627-1862. Saudi Paintball also has a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/saudipaintball1

Our World: Single Males Section at Mall Cafe

Segregation of the sexes is carried to the extreme here in Saudi Arabia. Doctors' waiting rooms have separate seating areas for men and women. Saudi homes have separate entrances for female guests and male guests, as well as separate parlors for men and women for entertaining. Saudis will likely not purchase an existing home if these gender segregation features are not available. Restaurants will generally have separate entrances and seating areas for families and different ones for men who are not accompanied by a female family member. This photo shows the single male's section of a mall coffee shop. This strict application of gender segregation is something I personally do not care for and don't think I will ever get used to.
