Saudi Arabia - We Three Kings

This was a display at a recent celebratory art event for Saudi Arabian National Day which was last week. Many works of art were on display.  Featured here are elegantly framed photos fit for a king - make that three kings.  In the center is the very first king of Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz, known as Ibn Saud, who united the tribes of the territories to form the nation.  Ibn. Saudi ruled from 1932 until 1953. All rulers since then have been Ibn Saud's sons.  His photo is displayed here along with two of his descendants.  

This is the current king of Saudi Arabia, King Salman.  He is the 7th king and is the last immediate son of Ibn Saud who will hold that position.  He is now 84 years old.  

The Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) is King Salman's son and is the heir apparent.  He is only 35 years old.  He would be the first grandson of Ibn Saud to become king, if that is how it all plays out.

Our World - A Problem with Blogging

Back in March of 2008, I posted this photo of my husband, to show what religious pilgrims wear when they travel to Mecca for Hajj or Omra.  Here is the actual post I made about it.

So you can imagine my surprise and disbelief when a few days ago, a friend sent me the photo below.  It is some type of advertisement using the cropped out image of my husband, superimposed over a photo with the background of the Great Mosque of Mecca.

The flyer says "Parvin - Dhoties, 100% Cotton Dhoties."  I located the company in India responsible for stealing my image for their label for a textile product.  My husband wants to be paid for the use of his image, and I want to be paid for the use of my photo. Somehow I doubt we will ever get paid...

Many bloggers, including myself, have had our images stolen without our permission and without compensation. It is a huge problem. The only time I really mind is when my photos are used for advertising by a company that can and should pay for use of the images. They are making a profit off of my work - and I'm not.

Times are Changin'

Many changes are happening rapidly in Saudi Arabia.  It's a very historic and exciting time in the country.  One recent change that I have noticed is women in pictures!  This huge ad inside a mall in Jeddah has four women prominently featured - and their faces are visible! Not pixilated. Not blurred out. Not marked over with a black marking pen. This is a big change! 

The photo below of another large ad inside a mall also has a woman's face showing. This ad is actually advertising for another big change in the kingdom - the arrival of movie theaters!   

Photographing the Photographer

This photo of me was taken at an art exhibit in Jeddah last year. I had been approached by a university student who was doing a project about Western women married to Saudis. I was one of several other women who agreed to participate.  She came over to my house and interviewed me and took photos, which she then compiled into a book.  The photo hanging on the wall is actually of me holding my passport, and the book I'm holding shows a photo of me taking photos in Jeddah.

Jeddah: Images of the New King

Huge photos of the King of Saudi Arabia and his future successors abound here on billboards and are plastered all over businesses and even apartment buildings.  At the age of 79, King Salman became the head of state in January 2015 upon the death of his half-brother King Abdullah.

The above photo was a display in a shop window of a local mall.  Showing and pledging loyalty to the new king is important  here.

This is another huge billboard honoring the new king and his next in line. 

SkyWatch: Jeddah Art Week

Jeddah Art Week begins in just a few days, and this photo that I took is being used for all the promotions and announcements of the Art Week events.  The splash of yellow paint was manipulated into the photo by an artist.  I first published this photo without the coloring manipulation on this blog in June 2013.  I was thrilled to be contacted by an outfit in London asking for permission to use some of my photos for promoting Jeddah Art Week.

Yesterday morning my husband drove me down to the new open air sculpture museum, where many of Jeddah's refurbished and repaired sculptures that I love so much have been placed in their new permanent home.  The opening ceremony for Jeddah Art Week will be held there and I will be posting photos of the sculptures on this blog over the next few days in support of this wonderful weeklong event.  If you are in Jeddah, do try to attend the opening ceremony or any of the many events planned throughout the week.  Hope to see you there!  Click here for a map guide to the events.

Hole in the Wall

I wonder about the lives of the people who live in places like this. I believe that foreign workers from poorer countries are the inhabitants of these homes.

Censorship Confusion

This is a really huge sign inside a mall in Jeddah.  I just don't understand why whoever put this sign up felt that the two girls' faces on the left needed to be blurred out, while the girl on the right wasn't.  It's all so confusing to me...

SkyWatch: The Sun Also Rises

I apologize for my absence from the blogging world these past few months. I wasn't much in the mood after my mother's death in July. I'm back in Jeddah now and hope that I can now resume posting daily from Saudi Arabia for your enjoyment.
